FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
What is FTP, and what does an FTP client do?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is the most widely-used
protocol designed for transferring files from one machine
to another. It allows you to design your site locally and
upload it to our servers when it is ready. Most FTP programs
also allow you to create directories, rename and delete
files.
Where can I get an FTP client?
Through your browser you can type in ftp://ftp.domainname.com
and then enter your user name and password. You can then
drag your files into the correct directories. It may be
easier to use a graphical FTP client, such as one of the
following FTP programs:
Filezilla
WS_FTP
CuteFTP
Fetch (Apple OS)
Once you have a program ready use your account information
to login.
Host: ftp.domainname.com
User name: domainname.com
Password: Your Password
You will be automatically placed into your root folder where
you can upload and download your files. Place your files
into the 'wwwroot' directory and databases into the 'db'
folder. Please be sure to always have a backup of your files
just in case. BMCHosting.com cannot provide backups of your
files should they be lost.
